High quality Barley produces high quality Malt

Because our customers need specific malt types in order to produce quality beer and whisky, we require top quality fully traceable malting barley.

Controlled Sourcing and Production

Close ties to our growers strengthens each link in our supply chain. All 13.000 Axereal farmers and shareholders receive support from our Axereal agronomists.

Axereal trains its farmers in new technologies and provides them with the best varieties of barley developed in our laboratories and proven upon our own trial plots.

For our Central European operations barley is predominantly sourced through three subsidiary companies of Axereal- Granit Agriculture in Hungary, Agrobaza in Serbia end PPK in Croatia who coordinate production of cereal crops including malting barley under contract through a wide network of farmers.  These three companies through Axereal have become leaders in the region in the production of malting barley seed so as the develop new varieties and influence what is grown in order to deliver the quality required by the Group’s malting activities in the region.

In Ireland malting barley is 100% contracted through around 600 growers giving full traceability from farm to the maltings.  Malting barley varieties are allocated to these growers and the correct certified seed produced by Boortmalt growers through a Department of Agriculture regulated seed system is distributed to the 600 growers.  Boortmalt’s team of agronomists oversee and advice growers on barley production throughout the season in order to end up with top quality barley ready for malting.

Modern techniques improve the growing and sustainability of our barley.

At Boortmalt we remain dedicated to improving our methods of production so that we leave behind the lowest possible ecological impact.

Customer demand for new varieties of barley with unique qualities drives our innovation.  In the heart of France, you will find a unique experimental farm where we test the technologies and cereal inputs of the future under perfectly controlled conditions. At Domaine du Chaumoy, close to 200 technicians bring the most innovative techniques into everyday use.
